All I want to do is shred cheese.
I won this great 1955 "foodmaster" on ebay. It is just like my Mother's. I had to have one after using Mom's to make my homemade pimiento cheese spread.
It's so simple~
Select proper cutting cone, feed cheese in the hopper and turn crank....
within seconds I had a nice pile of shredded cheese....
The BEST SHREDDER, STRINGER, THIN SLICER, WAFFLER & THICK SLICER ever!
If you find one in your thrift shopping~ Goodwill, garage sales, estates sales, or find one on ebay, grab it~ You will absolutely love it!

Looks like a real honey of an appliance.

My mom had something like that. On Thanksgiving, I would watch her grind up the giblets with it. I couldn't take my eyes off of it. What can I say, I was a simple child and we didn't have cable. :) Have fun with it :) Buy giblets :)

I love it!!! I've always said that if I could hire someone to do something it would be to grate cheese (and chop onions but that is another story)!!! I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for one.
We used something similar for Thanksgiving too, I seem to remember grinding the cranberries and orange peel for cranberry relish...a fun memory though to this day I don't care for cranberry relish WITH oranges!

Sometimes the things our moms used were the best!

Tina,
I love it, too. It's truly a classic. I love the fact that it's hand cranked.

Fun! My mom had one too. After she past away we found the shredder cones, but not the base. I couldn't bear to get rid of them and use the cones as a shade (open side up) for votive cups. Just be careful when you blow them out. The metal can still get hot...
Thanks for sharing.

I had no idea there was any other way to grate cheese until I was off on my own and couldn't find one of these in the store!

I make a lasagna from scratch and I have a similar tool that I use. it's not old thought, but there is nothing better for shredding cheese.
I've added your blog to the side bar of the new Our Little Corner blog
http://ourlittlecornernoonday.blogspot.com/
I figured you shopped there at some point. Stop by and see it sometime.

I remember seeing one of these at my grandmother's house. I remember seeing her putting chicken through it to make chicken salad.

I bet that would look great in the kitchen at your dream farmhouse. Cheese that you grate yourself is so much better than the packaged grated cheese at the store.

Hi Tina,My grandmother had one of those and we wanted to play with it all the time and of course she wouldn't let us ! I don't know why she thought we would grind our fingers up ! LOL
I am on a quest for one now !

That looks like a very good piece of kitchen equipment...you can't beat the older things, they're just made better! Now all we need is the recipe for that cheese spread! It looks wonderful!

I bought one new in 1989, and it IS wonderful, and easy to clean. Havent used it in a while, since I keep buying bags of shredded cheese (not as good, I know I know) It looks like you are missing the finger guard, a white plastic thing that slides over the top. Mine is called a Saladmaster, but it looks identical. I also have the BEST pair of scissors, also from Saladmaster.
