Old-Fashioned Orange Layed Cake~
Can we start with dessert first? Wouldn't that be GREAT! = ) Tomorrow we're going to my BIG brother's home in Longview, Texas...Ric and his wife Karen and their daughter, Brianna. They are hosting a hamburger supper outside by the pool. I thought it would be a great time to "try out" this new/old cake recipe I found in the newspaper the other day...The lady baker said this Old-Fashioned Orange Layer Cake recipe was over 75 years old...I love anything orange!
You'll need fresh orange juice..1 cup orange juice= 3 medium-size orange
4 teaspoons grated orange rind= 1 medium-size orange
The recipe calls for 1/2 cups fresh orange juice for the cake and 1/3 fresh orange juice for the icing~
Cut oranges..sniffsniffsniffsniffsniffsniff...
Get the vintage glass juicer out!! I love doing this!!
To prepare cake, combine sugar and butter.
Add eggs and orange rind.
Reduce speed to low and beat in orange juice.
Blend well...
Add flour...
alternately with milk; beat well.
Pour into pans. Bake 22 to 25 minutes, until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool in pans 15 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.
To prepare icing, combine butter, and half of the confectioners' sugar. Using a mixer at low speed, beat until well blended.
Add orange rind, orange juice...gradually add remaining sugar.
Beat until smooth. Spread about 3/4 cup icing on top of one layer. Place second layer on top. Spread remaining icing in a thin layer over top and sides. Serves 20.
I'm not leaving... I want a piece of cake! We can't cut it Tulley...not until tomorrow!!

I am SO going to try making this cake! Anything orange is my favorite and summer time seems like such a great time for a fresh orange flavor. My little scottie, Pippen, looks just like Tulley when we're in the kitchen cooking. How can you say "no" to those sweet, brown eyes? :) Enjoy the family get-together.

Poor Tully...are you taunting that poor child by not letting him lick the spoons...or at least have a "little" taste??
The cake sounds delish...hope you have a blast at your brothers house...oh! and I want to know ONE thing...why isn't your arse the size of Texas with all the great eats you cook up...I swear...if I ate half of what you cook...you could land air force one on my backside...zawls I'm saying...friend...zawls I'm sayin!
Blessings...

I made this exact cake and had a lot of trouble with too much batter....did I beat too much air into it? Almost ran over in the pan so next time I'm making three layers in smaller pans...L

What a delicious looking cake. I'm with Tulley. What would be any beter than a little bite of that great cake. When I'm cooking my Maggie Mae sits on the rug and waits patiently for me to drop something in her little mouth. The are so cute, aren't they? Thanks for the recipe.

Hi Tina,
This Orange Cake makes my mouth water.
The Pound Cake from your December post was great! So were the brownies with the Hershey bars! I even did a post about the Pound Cake. Thanks for all your great recipes.

The cake looks delicious. This is better than watching the FOOD Network! I'm sure you'll have a great time at your brother's. I think I'll try that cake the next time I need a dessert for something.

I haven't had orange cake in years. My grandmother made the best orange cake, and I miss not having it. I will definitely make this cake. Love your little Doxie. I have a two year old red short haired. Her name is Hilda. She followes me everywhere, and loves her sweets. Aren't they wonderful companions?
